Changes to the Lesson Plans

Hey! Two post in a row. A missing camera put a delay in posting and caused two post in two days. Enjoy!

I've made some changes since my post of our lesson plans for the year. Most are minor (thank you Lord!).

We put the Life of Fred math book away for the time being. About every 5 lessons they have a "bridge" which is a test. Caleb really struggled with this and after trying it twice and going over what he didn't understand I decided to put the book away for awhile. No big deal! He really enjoyed reading the stories, but he wasn't learning or maybe just not retaining. This might be used as review over the summer.

Our Faith & Life books were getting yawns and eye rolls. They were getting done, but the boys reaction to them put a bad taste in my mouth and I wasn't getting the remaining religious education done during the week. I first decided  to move it to the end of the week and put everything else first. This didn't help. I decided then to just put those books away and teach the boys the catechism together. We are reading St. Patrick's Summer right now. I have some other books on hand for later, but won't decide until we finish this book. We are still reading about Saints from our various saint books. We are starting our school time with morning prayers and reading the Gospel story for the day.

In history we are working even slower than originally planned. I'm fine with this. I was hoping to add in ancient/world history, but instead the boys have taken an interest in World War II, which I guess is world history, but just out of order. I decided to back up to the 1930's and read picture books about the United States during the Great Depression. I think they can relate (maybe a little?) since we are in a recession currently. I just finished reading a bunch of wonderful books and are now ready to read some picture books on WWII. Caleb has been reading on his own books of interest about the war. He is also reading Winged Watchman as assigned reading. We also found some WWII movies on Netflix to watch. Maybe next term we will pick up on Ancient Rome from where we left off last year. That seems so long ago! We are enjoying this interest led history at the moment!

What changes have you made?

PS-I really didn't have any pictures to go with this post, so I took some pictures outside of some of my favorite things. My garden troll is enjoying his new spot in the flower bed after the retaining wall work.
