How we do Catechism

As a Catholic family, we put bible study and learning the Catholic faith into our school day. Every year is a little different, but here is what is working for us this year. See picture below for some of our resources.

Tyler is preparing to make his First Reconciliation and First Communion. I use a lot of miscellaneous books I have picked up over the last few years. Our main spine is the Faith & Life 2 and we use for activities and diggin deeper the Image of God 2. I also get lots of activity ideas online from other Catholic moms. Catholic Icing  is one of my favorites! Lapbooks for Catholics is one of my favorite places to buy Catholic topic lapbooks. Right now we are learning about sin, forgiveness, and we will be getting into how to make a confession in the next couple of weeks. He should be ready to make his First Reconciliation during the Advent season. I am enjoying all his questions and he is working really hard. Tyler admitted that forgivness for hard for him, so we will be adding stories of forgiveness into our studies and talking about how forgivness is always the best thing to do. I think this is a hard thing for a 7 year old to understand, as I have seen many adults not able to understand forgiveness either.

Caleb has been using the Image of God 5 book this year. We had used the Faith & Life series up until this year with him, but we are enjoying this new series. We are both enjoying doing the reading together and discussion.

Of course, we read from the bible and the children's bible stories book too. No game plan on this but we read stories as they come up and sometimes we just read the readings for the day. I hope to have a more organized approach to this soon. Caleb started in Genesis in August and we have stopped to work on Ancient Egypt and will continue in the bible soon, as most of his history this year comes from the bible.

Everything is going well and Tyler is impressing me with all the information he is retaining. He is very excited about this important year in his life and I am loving watching him grow in his faith.

I am already getting excited about next year. I am going to combine the boys in their study and do a whole year of Saint study. I always try to add these in throughout the year, but we just lack the time and we don't get done what I would like. I think it will a good time to learn about our Catholic inspirations. I have a ton of books just sitting around and ready to be used. Will start the planning next spring/summer, but that is another post!
