Our School Year 2012-2013-Science

An additional new school area since we have outgrown the kitchen table.

Science was an easy pick for Caleb, but a small dilemma for Tyler. I like the CM way of just reading living books about science topics. I am not a big hands-on science person, but my boys enjoy hands-on. I have always enjoyed the CHC Behold and See Series (they read like living books) and we usually add in additional living books.

Last year Caleb didn't use Behold & See (we used Apologia instead), so this year we are using Behold & See 5, since 6 wasn't out yet when I was buying.

Tyler's science took me a long time to decide since Behold & See 3 was my least favorite in the series. We started doing the science out of HOD Bigger, but I was not pleased with the experiments. The first one we did had incorrect information or at least the information was lacking. Tyler noticed and looking at the remaining ones I knew this would not meet our goals for science. I got out Behold & See 3 (left from Caleb) and we started that. This boy loves science and he isn't too impressed with the experiments in this book either. Maybe he was paying attention when I did this with Caleb a few years ago. We will use it off and on and study some other topics along the way (with living books, narrations, hands-on activities) including: study of the seashore, birds and John Audubon, science in Colonial times, and who knows what else. I might do posts on these topics in the future.

My post on Monday will be on religious education. Be sure to check out my previous planning post on history, math, and language art.
